The Rundown: Steve Rogers comes out of the ice in a brand-new world and must find a purpose within it.

A young man finds himself standing within the aftermath of one of the worst moments in the history of America and is determined to do his part to make sure that it never happens again. Unfortunately, his small stature and medical issues make him the target of bullies when he tries to serve until he receives a visit from someone who offers him a chance to be the hero he wants to be.

Steve Rogers has been out of the ice for a couple of weeks and is still getting his bearings as he resumes the mantle of Captain America to take down a former soldier looking to destroy the UN building. After diffusing the situation, Cap decides that he needs to return to the service where General Ross offers him the opportunity to serve with a new iteration of the Howling Commandos who have their first mission, infiltrate Latveria and deal with Doom.

The Story: Zdarsky crafts an entertaining story in this first issue. I love the parallels between Steve’s origin story and Colton’s. Bringing the same elements into a modern setting sets up some interesting conflicts in both ideals and ideology between the two. I love seeing Steve immerse himself in what he knows as he tries to navigate a world that moved on without him and I really enjoyed the cameos and how they served an actual purpose in Steve’s journey.

The Art: Schiti delivers beautifully detailed and visually exciting art throughout the issue. I really love the style of the imagery and how immersive the art is on every page.
